Our Kaupapa

Our mission is to empower and support our community on their wellbeing journey through the practice of Yoga, mindfulness and Te Ao Māori teachings. Our kaupapa is based on Te Whare Tapa Whā, the four pillars of Hauora or Wellbeing.

Pillars  / Pou

  • Tinana / Body: Through mindful movement we create physical health.

  • Hinengaro / Mind: Through mindfulness practices we develop our emotional awareness & wellbeing.

  • Wairua / Spirit: Our physical and mental practices lead us to a deeper sense of connection, love & purpose in the world.

  • Whānau / Community: In a supportive and loving community we create the fertile ground on which we can nurture & grow together.

From this holistic approach we aim to provide the support you need to live into the fullest expression of yourself alongside those you love.

We feel that Te Ao Māori and the ancient teachings of Yoga blend beautifully together to create a framework for overall wellbeing.  Both philosophies teach us that everything starts with our individual wellness. This leads us to better relationships with others, a clearer purpose in life and a greater connection to the world around us.

We also believe there are many ways to access wellbeing and that wellbeing needs are not the same for everyone. At AWHI, creating a diverse and inclusive space for all bodies, abilities and identities is of utmost importance, which is why we offer a range of classes from Vinyasa Flow Yoga (heated & non-heated) to gentle Yin Yoga, Meditation, Yin Therapy, Pilates, live music, Yoga events, workshops, retreats & trainings.

We invite you to bring all parts of yourself to the mat, to listen to your body and honour your wellbeing needs which vary day to day, person to person.

All of this comes wrapped in a supportive community - AWHI Yoga & Wellbeing.

Our Whare

Our beautiful studio is located in the Wellington CBD at 15 Johnston Street just one block back from Lambton Quay & the Waterfront. We are situated on Level 2 with ample light and space, and beautiful hardwood floors. Our large main studio, ‘Whare Oho,’ is used for most classes and our smaller studio ‘Whare Wānanga’ is used for smaller classes, programs, trainings and as a meeting space.

Because we are a community hub, our lounge and reception area is a really important place where members can hang out, drink complimentary herbal tea from our communi-tea urn, read books or relax before class.

We have 4 showers and 3 toilets, plus cubbies and mat storage for members. We aim to be plastic-free, so please bring your drink bottle and fill from our in-studio kitchenette and water filter.

Mats and towels can be hired from reception for $2 per visit - or bring your own. Bolsters, blocks, cushions, straps and blankets are provided when needed.

Class bookings are optional and can be made on our AWHI App, otherwise feel free to just show up 15 minutes prior to class start time. Haere mai!
