200 Hour Teacher Training Overview & Synopsis 2019

Awhi Yoga and Wellbeing are pleased to announce our 200hr teacher training experience for 2019. This program is a comprehensive and thorough journey into becoming a 200 hr certified Yoga Teacher co-lead by Jase Te Patu & Justine Hamill. Whether you are taking this journey with a view to teach or as a personal journey & deepening of your practice & knowledge, it’s up to you!  

Our uniquely NZ Teacher Training explores beautiful marriage between ancient Yoga and Te Ao Māori teachings over 4 separate modules during our 4 months together. Our course follows the Māori model of Hauora/Well Being through the four pillars of Te Whare Tapa Whā. Beautifully this holistic view of health is the very same view taken by traditional Yoga. We work towards a deeper connection to our self, others and to something way greater enabling us to connect with our purpose in life & how we may share this in service to the world!


PILLAR 1 - TINANA (Body) - 4 Days

We lay the foundations as a teacher here, getting really grounded in our bodies.

  • Daily practice 90 minutes

  • Group process, connection and daily check in.

  • Anatomy of the bones, tissues & muscles

  • The Flow sequence & postural alignment breakdown with functional anatomy incorporating sanskrit & māori.

  • An introduction to MAUNGA / Tadasana & our basic physical alignment cues in yoga postures.

  • Practical teaching & coaching experience daily.

  • Grounding, breath & bhanda

  • Somatic awareness

  • The exploration of similarities between yoga and Māori practices, hauora model


PILLAR 2 - HINENGARO (Mind) - 4 Days

We layer on to the first 4 days with an emphasis on discovering how our mind works  in connection with the body and our experience of life, beginning the journey into Yogic Philosophy, awareness.

  • Daily Practice 90 minutes.

  • Group process, connection and daily check in.

  • Review of Anatomy, continuation of sequence breakdown & functional anatomy.

  • Practical teaching & coaching experience daily.

  • Trauma sensitive awareness.

  • Methodology & ethics of teaching Yoga.  Boundaries, transference & self care.

  • An introduction to ancient yogic philosophy and the parallels with Māori teachings we cover the Sutras & Gita along with Yogic pathways to healing, the functions of the mind and Yogic lifestyle (8 limbs of Yoga). Māori concept of Hinengaro & Āio.

  • Guided meditation daily to watch and witness the mind.

  • A modern day application of philosophy to our lives, including svādhyaya or self-study work, clearing the pathway & journey into Dharma/Purpose.

  • Applied anatomy. Identifying anatomical variations and speaking to individual bodies in the classroom.


PILLAR 3 - RETREAT - WAIRUA (Spirit) - 6 Days

This is a 6 day fully immersive experience. Taking place at Waihōanga Retreat Centre North of Wellington, be prepared to dive deep into all aspects of the yoga practice, with the particular focus on opening through spirit. We will build on and integrate all we have learnt so far and deepen our experience & connection to ourselves and the world around us.

  • Practice twice a day - Vinyasa & Yin/Restorative.

  • Continue with Practical teaching & coaching sessions.

  • Explore our Dharma or purpose, how our challenges lead us to our gifts.

  • Journey into finding the voice and speaking our truth.

  • Continue self inquiry work with group connect sessions and individual touch points throughout the week.

  • We interweave, group activities, fire circles, kirtan and māori waitata throughout the whole week.

  • We deepen our connection to nature, eachother & source.

  • This week is fully catered with whole, healthy, nourishing vegetarian kai.


PILLAR 4 - WHANAU (Family/Community) - 4 Days

We complete our journey with a complete review & focus on connection to others, service and a final celebration with whānau/family.

  • Learn the tools & art of assisting & connecting to students safely with appropriate boundaries and awareness.  A sensitive journey into hands on assisting, we discuss this thoroughly in the current Yoga context.

  • We revisit & review all material with a final written and practical assessment.

  • Group process, completion and organic inquiry based on group needs.

  • Whānau are invited to our closing graduation ceremony held at AWHI Yoga and Wellbeing on Sunday evening.
